Depth Over Noise (I)

A Word for Believers Who Are Busy But Feel Empty

“Deep calls unto deep at the noise of Your waterfalls;
all Your waves and billows have gone over me.”

Psalm 42:7 (NKJV)

A few years ago, I noticed something in my walk with God that I could not ignore. I was doing the right things. I was praying. I was reading my Bible. I was listening to messages. From the outside, everything looked fine. But inwardly, something felt off. I felt full but not satisfied; busy, but not grounded; engaged, but not deeply connected to God. So, I asked the Lord a simple question: “Why do I feel like this?” The answer came quietly, but clearly: You are surrounded by noise, but you are not going deep.

Let me be honest. You can go to church every week and still feel distant from God. You can sing during worship and still feel disconnected. You can read your Bible and still not be changed. It is possible to be doing many spiritual things and yet remain spiritually shallow. Noise can look like growth. Activity can look like maturity. But they are not the same. Right now, many believers are not struggling because they do not love God. They are struggling because their lives are full, but their depth is low.

We live in a world that is always on. There is always something to watch, listen to, read, or respond to. Even spiritually, there is always another sermon, another clip, another message. But constant input does not automatically produce transformation. Sometimes, it prevents it. When your life is always filled with noise, you lose the ability to sit, reflect, and hear God clearly. It does not take much for this to happen. You wake up and check your phone. You move from one task to another. You fill every quiet moment with something. And before long, your relationship with God becomes something you fit in, instead of something you build your life around.

The answer to this is not a better routine or a more disciplined schedule, though those help. The answer is found in how Jesus Himself lived. When you look at the life of the Lord Jesus, you see a clear pattern. He spent time alone with the Father. He withdrew from the crowds. He prayed, often and intentionally. What people saw publicly was supported by what happened privately. That pattern still applies. If we neglect time with God in private, our public faith will begin to feel empty, no matter how active we are.

Depth is where real transformation happens. Not when you rush through a chapter, but when a verse stays with you. Not when you say quick prayers, but when you actually connect with God. Not when you hear many messages, but when one truth begins to shape how you live. This is where the work of the Holy Spirit becomes real. God does not just want to inform you. He wants to change you. He wants to strengthen you from within, guide you clearly, and build something solid in your life. That happens in depth.

“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think,
according to the power that works in us.”

Ephesians 3:20 (NKJV)

The power works in us. Go deep. Stay there.
