(Exodus 17: 8-13)
There are people that you will come across that will change the trajectory of your life. They will come in quietly, do their part and leave quietly. You may not even know their names- they can be that ambiguous.
But without them, you just may not fulfil your calling on this planet: God brings them into your life at specific times to contribute to your destiny. They are not usually loud or popular but they are important.
Sometimes they come in when you are in the Valley of Decision and they just say a word that will give you clarity. Or they offer you a helping hand that will take you to the next level in your life.
They are not usually meant to stay: they just contribute their quota and leave as quietly as they came. You need wisdom to know when these people are done with you to let them go but sometimes, we hold on to them out of sentiment to our own detriment.
In the above Scripture reference is a story about a man called Hur. He was not mentioned before this event and he was not mentioned again after it. He simply came into the scene, carried out his assignment in helping Moses fulfil his destiny and he left.
The Israelites had left Egypt, en-route the Promised Land when they ran into the Amalekites and had to engage them in battle. Moses ordered Joshua to organize an army to engage in the battle physically while he would go on the mountain to engage in the battle spiritually, holding the staff of God in his hands.
Moses went up the mountain to intercede as Joshua led the army to fight. With him were 2 men: his brother, Aaron and HUR.
As Joshua fought the Amalekites and Moses prayed with his hands lifted up, Joshua prevailed. But when Moses got tired and lowered his hands, the Amalekites prevailed. So, Aaron and HUR sat either side of Moses and helped him to keep his hands up until Joshua defeated the Amalekites and won the Battle.
That was all HUR was called to do; to help Moses fulfil his destiny.
He faded into oblivion after that, inasmuch as Aaron became the first High Priest and remained a part of Moses’ ministry till he died. The part HUR had to play was just to hold up Moses’ hand on that mountain.
A similar story is found in the Book of Genesis Chapter 37 Verses 12-17.
Joseph’s brothers had gone out to graze their father’s flock in Shechem. After a few days, their father Jacob sent Joseph to go check up on them and bring him information about their welfare. Joseph got to Shechem and did not see his brothers.
Verses 15-17 say, Now, a certain man found him wandering in the field and the man asked him. “what are you looking for?” Joseph replied, “I am looking for my brothers”. The man then told him, “They have departed from here to Dothan”….
Unlike HUR, that man was not named but he was very crucial in the life of Joseph: if he had not spoken to him, Joseph would probably go back home to tell his father he didn’t see his brothers in Shechem.
And he wouldn’t have been sold into slavery in Egypt and he wouldn’t have worked for Potiphar.
And Potiphar’s wife wouldn’t have seduced him.
And he would not have ended up in Prison.
And he would not have become the Head Prisoner.
And he would not have met with Pharaoh’s Chief Butler and Chief Baker.
And he wouldn’t have interpreted their dreams.
And he wouldn’t have had the opportunity to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams.
And he wouldn’t have become the Prime Minister of Egypt.
And he wouldn’t have saved the lives of his family.
And he wouldn’t have seen his father and brothers ever again.
All these happened because “A Certain Man saw him wandering in the field” and gave him direction.
We all have that “A Certain Man” like HUR in our lives, folks. Let them do their part in our lives on our road to destiny and let them go.
Joseph did not bother to look for that man to thank him after he had become what he became in Egypt. It was NOT necessary.
People will come into our lives and go- let them go when their part in your life is done.
Shalom,
Haruna Daniels.
