March is the Month of The Burning Light, John 5:35, Philippians 2:15

That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world (Philippians 2:15).

In John 5:35, the Lord Jesus points out something beautiful in the character of John the Baptist: “He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.” What a description, coming from the lips of the Master Himself!

Not every light is a burning and shining light. Some are cool and dull, but Jesus gave witness that John was a burning and shining light. And because John was a burning and a shining light, other people rejoiced in his light, so they could see with it.

Do you know you can have the Lord describe you this way, within the context of your service to Him? Sure! Make up your mind to be not just a light, for you’re already the light of the world. Rather, be a burning and shining light.

The way to burn and shine is by being effective in the things the Lord has called you to do. The Bible says, “Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord” (Romans 12:11).

To be a burning and a shining light means you’re fervent, agile, and enthusiastic about spiritual things.

From sunup to sundown, the Gospel is paramount on your mind. It’s impossible for you to keep quiet; all you think and talk about is world evangelism. It brings to mind the words of the Prophet Jeremiah: “But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay” (Jeremiah 20:9).

When you’re a burning and shining light, every encounter with you by those who don’t know Christ is an unforgettable moment with divinity.

You’re afire with the Gospel twenty-four hours a day; you’re perpetually high on the Holy Ghost. This is how God expects you to live, as one who’s fervent in soul-winning and prayer for lost souls!

As a burning and shining light, you seek to touch everyone with the power of God. When there’s a need in the ministry, you’re there to give of your time, efforts, and resources.

This is how to burn and shine for the Lord. Before long, others will come and rejoice in your light; they’ll hear your inspiring testimonies and be stirred to pray and make an impact just like you.

I want to spend my life,

Mending broken people,

I want to spend my life,

Removing pain

Lord, let my words,

Heal a heart that hurts

I want to spend my whole life

Mending broken people

What is a passion? It refers in this context to an intense, driving, or overmastering feeling or conviction. It can also be a strong liking or desire for or devotion to some activity, object, or concept.

The Lord Jesus Christ described John the Baptist as a “burning and shining light” in John 5:35. This description depicts a man who is about his business in a diligent and passionate manner that produced evident results.

In John 8:12, Jesus said, “…I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” Again, in John 9:5, He said, “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

Light is that which defines, describes, and illumines. In Psalm 119:105, the Psalmist writes, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

To live without Christ is to live in gross darkness and utter hopelessness. You can’t even know yourself outside Him, for only in Him—His light—is your true identity and personality revealed. The Bible says with Him is the fountain of life: in His light shall we see light (Psalm 36:9).

If you use all the lights in the world to define your life, you’re sure to see things that you don’t like. But under His light, you’re excellent and full of glory. God’s light—His Word—shows who you are, what you have, and your abilities in Christ. Y

ou may use the X-rays and see the human bones or anatomy, but only the Word shows the greater One that lives in you.

Apart from showing you your endowments and rights in Christ, the Word also produces in you such changes that are consistent with the message it bears. Moreso, the Word leads and directs you in God’s perfect will for your life, imparting you with the wisdom to fulfill it.

As you study God’s Word and meditate therein, you’ll have light as to the specific things you’re supposed to do this new year. You’ll have light as to the goals to set, and the definite steps to take in actualizing those goals.

You’ll have the insight and knowledge to deal excellently in all your affairs. You’ll walk in success, health, prosperity, peace, and strength if you walk in, and see by God’s Light—His Word.

The Lord Jesus, talking to the Jews, said, “While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light…” (John 12:36). He told them to believe in the light, that they may be the children of light. But they didn’t. We believed, and we received eternal life and became children of light.

The Apostle John gave us the revelation of the incarnate Word. He describes how He (the Word) was in the world, but the world knew Him not. He unequivocally declares that God’s Word is life; that life being the light of men!

In the fifth verse, he continues, “And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” The word translated “comprehend” is the Greek, “katalambanō”; it means to seize, to attain, and also to overcome. Thus, the light shines in darkness, and the darkness couldn’t attain to its power; it couldn’t overcome, nor seize it.

The darkness couldn’t take hold of or comprehend the mystery of the lights.

The darkness couldn’t overpower or overcome light, and still hasn’t! Have you ever turned on the light in a room and the darkness was so thick that it caused the light to recede? That can never happen! Even if the light is small or a mere flicker, the darkness has to pull apart.

This should help you understand who you are when Jesus said, “Ye are the light of the world…”(Matthew 5:14). He was talking about your calling as a Christian, and you must become conscious of this truth.

You’re called to light up the darkness in your world, in your sphere of influence; you’re that light that darkness can’t comprehend.

Perhaps you’re a student, a security guard, a lawyer, a banker, a doctor or a scientist; you’re the light in your community of practice. If there’s so much darkness surrounding a subject, you’re the one to proffer answers. You’re the light in that field, imbued with supernatural ideas and genius for the solutions needed.

Light up your world today: “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your moral excellence and your praiseworthy, noble, and good deeds and recognize and honor and praise and glorify your Father Who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16 AMPC).
