Many Christians want to hear God’s voice in a practical way — especially to minister healing. Yet many still ask: How do I receive words of knowledge for healing? Is this only for a few “more spiritual” believers?
In this practical guide, you’ll learn how words of knowledge work, how to prepare your heart to receive them, how to discern the Holy Spirit’s voice, and how to minister healing with confidence. Everything is simple, biblical, and applicable to everyday life.
Who Can Give Words of Knowledge for Healing?
A common misconception today is that words of knowledge, healing, and prophecy are “spiritual gifts” given to only a few Christians. However, in the New Testament Greek, Scripture presents one gift, which is the Holy Spirit. Words of knowledge, healing, prophecy, and other workings are manifestations of the Holy Spirit who dwells in every believer. All of this rests on a foundational truth: God desires to heal and bless people. If you still have doubts about God’s will to heal, read first:
God Desires To Heal You
Scripture gives every Christian a basis for hearing God’s voice. When I travelled on mission trips years ago, I noticed something striking: everyone who stepped out to minister received words of knowledge for healing. I was one of the slowest to start.
I thought I was the worst at hearing God’s voice. Yet today, I receive words of knowledge regularly. It’s something that develops.
God promises to give the Holy Spirit to those who ask:
“How much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?” Luke 11:13 NIV
If you have not yet been baptized in the Holy Spirit, seek prayer for this. It is the foundation for living filled with God’s presence and sensitive to His voice.
How to Prepare Your Heart to Receive Words of Knowledge
If you have been baptized in the Holy Spirit, stay filled. Walk in Communion with Gid, read the Word, practice praise and thanksgiving
I describe flowing in words of knowledge like this:
“When you love people with God’s love, you often begin to see what God sees.”
The heart that receives words of knowledge is aware of God’s presence, sensitive to His love for people, and full of expectation to see that love touch lives.
Common Ways Words of Knowledge Are Received
First, we ask God to show us specific conditions for which people need healing. Then we walk in fellowship with the Holy Spirit and remain attentive, waiting for His direction.
God’s guidance often comes in simple, natural-feeling ways — not always dramatic visions. Words of knowledge can come in many ways. Here are some common ones:
- Feeling a pain or symptom that is not yours, often briefly
- Feeling heat, vibration, or tingling in a part of your body where you do not need healing
- Feeling as though a wind blows over part of the body
- Hearing an internal word or phrase
- Seeing a brief mental image or vision
- Receiving a supernatural “knowing” without logical explanation
- Looking at a person and perceiving, by God’s love, an area of the body in disorder or darkness
Many of these impressions are subtle and easy to confuse with imagination. But if you act in faith and ask, you’ll be surprised how often it truly was God speaking.
Sometimes, while praying for someone, I also see the condition changing in their body as I minister. When I sense peace and God’s presence filling that area, I ask the person to test it and confirm the healing.
How to Discern Between Imagination and the Voice of the Holy Spirit
It’s important to learn to distinguish natural impressions from the leading of the Holy Spirit. I’ve made mistakes at times by following human impressions.
Sometimes the Holy Spirit draws my attention to a specific part of someone’s body, and it becomes a very accurate word of knowledge. Other times, I’ve noticed the person touching their body, which naturally draws my attention — but it wasn’t the Holy Spirit. In other cases, someone reminded me of a previously healed person, and my memory created an association that was not revelation.
Learning to recognize these differences helps you grow in discernment.
How to Minister Using Words of Knowledge
If you are not completely sure, present the word as a question:
“Is there someone here with pain in the right knee?” or “Do you have a problem in this area?”
If the person confirms, ask them to test the condition. Often, healing has already taken place simply from hearing the word. If not fully healed, minister by commanding the condition and thanking God.
If you miss it, that’s okay. Simply say:
“If this doesn’t apply, it may have just been my own impression.” Don’t fear looking imperfect. We grow by practicing. Interestingly, there have been times I thought I missed it, only to discover later that the word was correct. In some cases, a person didn’t even know they had a condition until medical tests confirmed exactly what was revealed. Still, we never need to insist. If the word doesn’t make sense to the person, bless them and move on.
And even when a word of knowledge doesn’t land, people often mention another condition, receive prayer, and are healed in a different area. God always honors steps of faith.
Every Christian Can Give Words of Knowledge
If you are a leader, you can start by asking the group if anyone has a specific condition. If you’re not a leader, share what you sensed with a responsible leader and ask for the opportunity to present it. If needed, look for the person afterward. When I was younger and began receiving words of knowledge in group settings, local church leaders gave me space to share. I’ve also trained entire groups to practice words of knowledge, and we’ve seen many healings as young believers shared what God revealed.
Ministering in God’s power sometimes feels like an extreme sport. Your heart beats faster before stepping out. But when you see God touch someone, every step of faith is worth it.
Words of knowledge are not a privilege for a few. They are a manifestation of the Holy Spirit’s grace, available to every Christian who desires to grow in sensitivity to God’s voice. The more you walk in communion with the Lord, love people, and practice in faith, the more natural this flow becomes. Don’t be afraid to learn, try, and grow.
