Some time ago, I went to visit a friend. The friend’s 2 sons were playing outside the house in their compound. The older son did something to the younger son and he said, “My guy, calm down na- I be pesin pikin o!”

The parent was SHOCKED!

Now, the boy was 8, his brother was 10. They attended a good school, live in a good neighborhood: they will pass for NEPO “Children” in Nigerian Lingo.

The parent wondered where the 8-year-old son picked that language from.

 

Children learn things anywhere; their sphere of influence go beyond the limitations and control of their parents and these influences could be positive or negative.

 

Let’s look at David: he was a 17-year-old shepherd boy, the last born of his father. His daily routine was to lead out the sheep to feed in the morning and return in the evening with them. The next day, rinse and repeat.

It was on one of such days that Prophet Samuel came over to anoint him King. The family must have believed the Prophet made a mistake! There was apparently NOTHING in David that looked like royalty.

But what they did not know was that while he was out with the sheep, he was getting some influences in the wilderness! He was interacting with Divinity.

He encountered a lion and a bear and he killed both, his family was unaware. All they knew of him was a young boy taking care of his father’s sheep.

 

One day, his father Jesse sent him to his 3 eldest brothers who were soldiers in the Army. He got to the Military Camp and saw Goliath taunting the Army of Israel and he was provoked! He took up the challenge to fight Goliath! I can imagine what his brothers were thinking when David came out to dare Goliath! They saw a side of him they never knew existed. David defeated Goliath that day and he made the Evening News…

 

A Nigerian Musician, Asa sang a song titled “Fire On The Mountain”. The lyrics go “Tell me who is responsible for what we teach our children? Is it the internet or the stars on television?…. So Little Lucy turned 16, and like the movie she’s been seeing, she has a lover in her daddy she can’t tell nobody ‘til she made the Evening News…”

Little Lucy had been interacting with a movie in secret that ultimately affected her reality.

David was also interacting with Divinity in secret that ultimately affected his reality too.

So was my friend’s son.

At some point, what or who you have been interacting with in secret WILL show: it’s just a matter of TIME.

 

John the Baptist is also an example. He was a Jewish boy growing up in Israel. At some point he went to the wilderness… and he returned a different man.

Scripture says, “The child grew and became strong in spirit and was in the wilderness until the day of his manifestation…”

-Luke 1:80.

The day he made “the Evening News” came!

 

Same with Jesus. He was known as “the Carpenter, the son of Joseph”.

One day the same Carpenter they had always known turned water to wine! Carpenter opened blind eyes! Carpenter healed the sick! And just as my friend was shocked hearing the son say, “My guy, calm down na- I be pesin pikin o”, the people were shocked at what they were seeing. They said, “Is this not the Carpenter’s son? Is His mother not Mary? Are His brothers not James, Joses, Simon and Judas? Are His sisters not here with us?” where did this Man get this from?

Jesus also made the Evening News…

 

I once went to visit a brother in another University (I was an Undergraduate). He was not in his room when I got there, his roommate said he stepped out with some friends. So, I waited…

About 30 minutes later, a car drove in- the brother was driving it.

I was shocked!

I had never seen him drive before- I had no idea he knew how to. Apparently, he had been learning how to drive in secret. That day was the day of his Manifestation to me.

Imagine Jesse at the Battlefield, watching David stroll out in jeans and a t-shirt, with a sling in his hand to fight Goliath! He would probably have a heart attack.

The question now is, who or what are YOU interacting with in secret? Little Lucy was interacting with a movie in secret that eventually damaged her life. My friend’s son was interacting with someone somewhere and that affected his language. David was also interacting with Someone in secret and it affected his persona. The brother was also learning to drive in secret…

In all these examples, what they were doing in secret made the Evening News at some point.

We all know people who made the Evening News negatively: King David was one- Bathshebagate did that to him.

Jimmy Swarggart was another.

So were Eddie Long and Albert Odulele.

Scandals do that to people- especially those who have built a reputation for godliness and righteousness.

 

Whatever and whoever you are interacting with in secret, BE CAREFUL! Don’t end up like Little Lucy! Parents also need to deliberately look out for their children- especially those with Internet Access- these kids learn more than we think.

If you’re not guided, you WILL hear stuff from your children and wonder where they got them from. Just like my friend who heard the son call himself “Pesin Pikin”.

Our children should not end up like Little Lucy too.
